Chapter 5

I got to the office just after ten. Although I was slightly disappointed that Mr. Reed and I hadn’t woken up together, I had fallen asleep in his arms and was still riding the high from that.

After responding to email and returning phone calls, I turned my attention to the big pile of mail waiting to be opened and sorted.

Most of the mail seemed pretty routine: junk mail, personal correspondence, business letters and bills. Normally, I didn’t pay that much attention to what was in each piece of mail, only were it needed to be routed. But one invoice I opened struck me as odd.

The invoice was from Bill Blaine Photography... and was for $125,000!

The description was vague, but mentioned “contracted photography services,” “travel expenses,” and “guaranteed front page placement,” although it didn’t elaborate on what that meant.

Something about the photographer’s name sounded familiar.

On a hunch, I dug through the piles of paper on my desk and found a copy of the Post with my barely clothed body on the cover. Underneath the photo was a single line of teeny, tiny type:

The color drained from my face and I felt like I had been punched in the gut.

Mr. Reed had not only hired the photographer who took my picture as I was leaving his house in lingerie, but he had actually paid that photographer to ensure that my body was plastered on the front page of a prominent gossip magazine!

I got on my computer and typed in the address to Bill Blaine’s website. Scanning through the content on his site, I quickly learned that he was a member of the paparazzi as well a photographer –for-hire.

After searching Google and reading more about him, I realized that Bill Blaine was the go-to guy when you needed a photo strategically placed in a specific type of magazine or newspaper. Evidently, he had the kind of connections that celebrities, businesses and rich executives gladly paid to access.

I erased my search history, closed my browser and sat back in my desk chair. Now that I knew Mr. Reed had orchestrated the tabloid leak, what was I going to do about it?

Once the shock of my discovery had worn off, my mind raced as I tried to figure out what, exactly, was going on. Between the Gladys Casey connection and this new discovery, I didn’t know what to think.

My English Literature degree made me well aware of the who, what, where, when and why of a story. So I pulled out a sheet of printer paper and started writing things down.

This is what I knew for sure about the night in question:

Mr. Reed had brought me to his home for an amazing evening of incredible sex

He had me arrive through the servant’s entrance, presumably for discretion, but depart through the front door

At the time, this did strike me as odd, but when I mentioned it, he explained it away

He also made sure that my coat was left open, revealing
